The blockchain is essentially a system that solves problems, and every time it solves a problem, it gets a block, so it’s not essentially mining a currency.

They are building blocks for a digital reality, and the only reason cryptocurrencies have monetary value is to give people meaning.

But fear not : it is necessary to know and then face the reality around us.

We have already learned that the blockchain is a decentralized system.
The blockchain database (bitcoin) currently weighs about 400 gigabytes, and each block is about 2 megabytes.

When a block reaches 2MB, a new block is added to the chain.
Each valid block contains an average of 2,100 transactions.

Approximately 200MB of data is added to the blockchain each day.
Bitcoin is a digital certificate that can be tokenized.

Token and cryptocurrency are synonymous.

For example, ETH is the token of Ethereum, BTC is the token of Bitcoin.
In the cryptocurrency world, tokens are generated from pieces of programming code.

Currently, about 17,500,000 Bitcoins have been mined, and the maximum amount that can exist on the Bitcoin blockchain is 21,000,000.
The blockchain is like a notary, a big ledger, or a huge database.

Every 10 minutes a certain amount of bitcoin is generated and every 4 years half of it is generated.
In the blockchain there are two important numbers.
On one side are the nodes, and on the other side are the miners.

Nodes maintain constantly updated copies of the blockchain’s massive ledger.
Being a node is an altruistic job, and you do not receive any cryptocurrency for it.
This role can be filled by anyone with a modicum of computing power.

Miners are the ones who perform the operations, control the nodes, and collect the rewards.

Currently, Blockstream’s satellite service provides internet-free bitcoin (BTC) transactions and information exchange for cryptocurrency users in almost every corner of the world.
The company has leased six geostationary satellites that are used to broadcast blockchain in Africa, Europe, South and North America, and the Asia-Pacific region.

In the event of a power outage or internet disruption, a backup of the blockchain (currently 400 gigabytes) stored on a satellite can be restored without data loss.

Blocks are created by miners in a process known as block resolution, and when this occurs, bitcoins are created, which in turn are a reward for the miners who mined the block.

To create a block, miners must solve complex mathematical problems.
These math problems are solved by the protocol.
Miners must follow these calculations because bitcoins are mathematically encrypted.

The mining machine must find a key (hash) in the shortest amount of time possible.
No two hashes are the same and cannot be changed.

Each block must contain the hash just generated and the hash of the block immediately preceding it to form a chain.
Hashes are usually represented in hexadecimal alphanumeric code.

The result is a 64-character alphanumeric code.
For example :

The cryptographic (hash) function is a mathematical algorithm that converts a block of data (text) into a series of characters of fixed length.
Regardless of the length of the input data, the output value will always have the same length.

These are mathematical formulas that synthesize a large amount of information into a few characters.

In the input data, which is different in each blue box, the output key in each pink box has the same length : so we get a hash key of 64 characters.
It is like condensing a text of any length into 64 characters.
The length is always the same.

In contrast, for example, with an inverse hash generator, the output hash depends on the input data.
In molecular biology, the equivalent of a hash would be a “gene”.

A gene is a unit of information, a segment of DNA that encodes a gene product, protein, or RNA“.

Each hash is an alphanumeric hexadecimal code.
Biological DNA consists of a code generated from only four nucleotides : adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine.

A hash code, which is the solution to the mathematical problem obtained by the miners, can be seen as a gene or a piece of DNA, where each character would be the equivalent of a nucleotide.

In this case, there would be 16 types of nucleotides instead of 4 as in living organisms.

Currently, miners calculate about 89 quintillion hashes per second.
As a result, today’s blockchain (bitcoin) weighs about 400 gigabytes and each block on the chain weighs about 2 megabytes, which corresponds to a huge number of hashes or “virtual genes” or valid combinations obtained.

I still remember :

Well, we already have a number of blocks, or “virtual genes“, or pieces of “virtual DNA“.
What happens next ?

Once we have all the possible combinations, which would correspond to the complete genome map, the next step would be to combine all the “genes” or pieces of “DNA” to form a complete DNA chain or “virtual chromosome“.

Is this possible ?
The answer is yes, thanks to a distributed supercomputer network that tests all possible combinations until a complete DNA strand or chromosome is created.

EXSCALATE uses a “chemical library” of 500 billion molecules with a processing capacity of more than 3 million molecules per second.

This project, which uses the European supercomputing network in a distributed manner, has already simulated more than 1 trillion and 70 billion interactions between the molecules of a “virus” (farce) at the 15 active interaction sites, for a total of more than 1 billion interactions evaluated in just 60 hours, with a computing power of 81 petaflops (millions of billions of operations per second).
