The Addams Family is not your typical family.

They enjoy most things that would horrify most people.

Gomez Addams is an extremely wealthy man and can indulge his wife Morticia’s every desire, whether it be growing poisonous plants or having a candlelight dinner in a cemetery.

But The Addams Family (1964-1966) was also a show about tolerance of differences.
It portrayed a family that was happily at odds with the conservative, conformist values of the early ’60s.

Macabre, supernatural, unpredictable, crazy.

And also kind of perverse.

The idea that a penchant for chains or torture could be just one aspect of someone’s quirky personality was pretty radical in 1964.

It was also played for laughs.
But it’s not for nothing that Gomez and Morticia are often described as having the least dysfunctional marriage of any 1960s sitcom…
